Robocraft by Llewella Icehunter

Robocraft is a Player vs Player game similar to World of Tanks except the players build their own tanks (called robots) in whatever style they want, and there are no specific classes. Each account starts with about 1000-2000 basic blocks and a few coins to build their first robot. The most basic cubes, wheels, front-mounted guns, and the pilot seat are all free.

To get better blocks, players need to get tech points of the right tier, and once everything that tier can get has been bought, tech points are useless unless players spend real money. The best ways to get tech points are kills and participating in an enemy base capture while in a robot of the tier the player wants. It is also possible to get “assists” on kills, but I myself have not seen that to be easy.

In battle, players should be matched with and against other players of similar experience and firepower, generally within one tier. One team wins when they have either destroyed all of the other team or captured the enemy base. Some people (who probably have put “some” real money into the game) will put an over-powered gun on an otherwise tier one robot to get a low tier two or a high tier one, and demolish the noobs and people trying to get the last few tier one tech points needed.

I have seen maybe six or seven different maps. Some are in a desert biome, others are in a snowy biome, including ice that is hard to maneuver on. These require some skill, particularly in robot design. The desert requires some skillful maneuvering; the center of the map has rock pillars to navigate around, and the sides have fairly sharp curves with cliffs to tumble down if the robot can’t or doesn’t turn fast enough. The other difficult map is an icy one, where the sides are steep hills that no robot designed for fairly level ground can go.

There may not be any game specific classes, but I see common patterns in the builds that can be distinguished. “Tanks” are usually large, big hitters, and hard to kill. “Scouts” are often sleek and fast and will probably be at the front of the sidelines. The “Snipers” are unloved because they normally are very small flyers that camp high above home base and do nothing until the enemy tries to capture it.

In my opinion it is a fun game and should at least be given a chance.

Robocraft is unrated by the ESRB, but the Lego-style violence is pretty mild and should be suitable for an E-10 audience. That rating doesn’t apply to any of the online interactions, however, and the game doesn’t feature a chat filter.
